You don’t have to be in London to be a part of the games. Your SME could benefit from some “Aussie spirit.”
Our new PR Assistant, Marina, spotted this fun article on SmartCompany about some clever ways you can promote your business through the Olympics.
We’ve outlined some of the main ideas for you:

1. Play on words
Have fun with the Olympic theme without actually using their trademarked terms.
Some examples:
Reach your goals…
Get ahead in the race…
Be the best…
We’ve been in training to bring you…
Hit your target…
Dive in to our store today…
2. Well wishes
The IOC hasn’t trademarked every athlete’s name or the name of every country, so feel free to use your business account on Facebook or Twitter to send well wishes like ‘Great to see #StephanieRice bringing it home for the #OZ’.
3. Engagement
Get active on Facebook. Run polls, ask questions and start debates all themed around sport. For instance, you could ask a question like ‘If there is one sport you wish you could represent Australia in, what would it be?’ Or ask your fans to send in photos of their most prized sporting trophy or ribbon.
4. Not just on your own assets
Think about where else you can deploy the above levels of engagement other than on your business’ Twitter or Facebook page. Why not post some well-wishes on the Australian Olympic team Facebook page. Don’t include any commercial message, just a simple ‘Go Aussie’, however, if you choose the option to use Facebook as your business page before posting, your business name will be seen by all the viewers of that page.
5. Themed products and promotional materials
Depending on what your product or service is you might like to package up a special deal or offer with a general athletic theme. For example, a financial planning firm might run an offer over the Olympics of a free appraisal aimed to ‘Clear the debt hurdles’. Or offer a free e-book that explains ‘How to Win the Financial Race’. Be sure to ask your designer to package these promotional offers up in nationalistic colours and lots of sporting imagery.
So….Aussie, Aussie, Aussie oi oi oi!!
