Fake tradies: Be aware and alert

If there was ever a “buyer beware” story that will hit home about the importance of reading customer reviews before hiring a tradie – or any business – then this is it!

Last week, a poor 90-year-old navy veteran was robbed of his wedding ring and some precious family heirlooms when he accepted an offer to have his Sydney home pressure cleaned by a young man.

Unfortunately you can’t take many people at face value – particularly tradies who come knocking. Travelling conmen are not a new problem, but they’re a persistent one.

Police are doing what they can to make the community aware of these scam artists, including setting up a dodgy tradie hotline – but there are some things you could be doing:

  1. Ask for references and testimonials from past customers.
  2. Do your own research online. These days, you can find reviews for most businesses on Google (we have a Feedback section on our site).
  3. Check licences and insurance certificates.
  4. Request a valid address and ABN.

If you’re choosing a business on our site, it’s a good idea to select one that’s Verified. This means we have verified their address and ABN and can easily chase them up for you on the off-chance something goes wrong.
