Think a concrete floor only has a place in commercial buildings, like factories and warehouses? Think again. Right now, polished concrete floors are all the rage in residential properties too. Popular for its urban, industrial aesthetic, a concrete floor is ideal in inner city pads, as well as classic country homes, and will completely transform the look of any space.
There are two main ways of achieving a perfecly polished concrete floor:
1. Use existing concrete floor
Existing flooring is ground down to expose aggregate and then ground to a fine finish. The concrete floor is finished off with two coats of gloss polyurethane. You might also like to opt for the more costly full grind, where visible stones come through. However be warned, due to many variables not all existing floors are appropriate for polishing, so experts recommend conducting a test on a sample section first. If you're really lucky your concrete floors might be ready for a slick of gloss without any prep work!
2. Lay a new concrete slab
If you're building a new home, extending an old one, or your existing floors aren't suitable for polishing, then you'll need a concreter to pour you a new slab. Once this is done your floors are ready for polishing!
