Safety First: Asbestos Removal

While asbestos removal is a delicate process, the disposal of asbestos is just as important.

Materials containing asbestos should not be left lying about where they may be broken into pieces or crushed by people or traffic. All asbestos waste must be be disposed of as soon as possible.

It’s important not to remove any suspected asbestos material without first seeking expert advice, not only can this be extremely dangerous, it’s illegal for certain types of asbestos to be removed by anyone other than a licensed contractor.

Small amounts of asbestos may be removed by renovators, however there are strict procedures which must be followed:

  • Old fibro sheeting should be wrapped in two layers of black plastic with each end securely sealed with tape.
  • The package should be clearly labelled as “asbestos waste”.
  • It’s illegal to put asbestos in domestic garbage bins or compactors, so the “tainted waste” must be disposed of at a designated WSN transfer (landfill) station. Contact your Local Council for a licensed disposal point in your area.
