Sheds are designated work spaces. They’re the place where all the important household “fix-it” stuff happens. A quick glance inside and you might see a spanner or two, a lawn mower and maybe a couple of tins of paint, right? Wrong.
These days you’re more likely to trip over an xbox than a toolbox, as sheds are transformed from practical, work-oriented structures to designated recreational areas – or “man caves” if we’re using today’s lingo.
The man cave revolution began a few years ago, when males decided they needed a space of their own, somewhere to escape to – a male sanctuary. While sheds are a popular club headquarters, they’re not the only location choice, dingy basements, chilly garages and beaten-up dens can also make great man caves.
As long as the space is dedicated to all things “mannish” – or more appropriately – “boyish”- and equipped with all the basic necessities it’s worthy of the man cave label.
So what are the elements that make up a great man cave? Aside from high levels of testosterone (absolutely no girls allowed) the three staples include – a bar fridge (preferably stocked with a few 6-packs), a TV (a plasma or LCD screen is ideal) and a recliner or comfy lounge (leather is a popular choice).
For the best man cave on the block think about also adding a PlayStation (or equivalent) and pool table – or at the very least a dart board. Décor is also an important mood setter and can make a successful man cave. Carefully placed sports memorabilia and dim lighting are both great ambience enhancers.
While previously males had to utilise what they had and convert an existing work shed into a respectable man cave, sheds are now being built solely for this purpose. We’ve seen requests on ServiceSeeking.com.au for man cave sheds with all the trimmings.
Males can now drop the pretence and be honest about what’s really going on behind the closed shed door – not a lot of drilling, but a whole lot of swilling!
To the man cave!
