Electrician Rates

How much do electricians cost?

Leaving existing electricals in place while renovating will cut your costs considerably. However, this normally proves a near impossible task, so an electrician is often required.

Data on ServiceSeeking.com.au shows electrician rates are between $25 and $463 per hour, with the average job clocking in at $852. As this can be a dangerous profession, it's important you check the electrician is fully licensed. Site users typically select electricians who are verified and list their licence number.

As well as complex re-wiring, electricians are responsible for everything from lighting to antenna and home theatre installation. Simple lighting jobs, such as the installation of downlights, cost an average of $51.33 per hour, while sparkies charge an average of $695 for the average home theatre set-up.

In this age of security, electricians are also commonly asked to install automatic doors and gates, and this costs an average of $1533 per job. Electrician rates for the installation of a security system are between $35 and $80, with the average job totalling $1,176.

If you're building a new home, or extending an old one, where possible try and determine what wiring you may need. Pre-wiring costs significantly less than retro-fitting after the work is complete.

This data was derived from more than 70,000 quotes submitted on the site between October 2007 and 31 March 2010.
