Here are some common terms that web developers and designers will often refer to when quoting

• URL: this is more commonly known as your website address or domain name. It's what you type into a web browser to find a site. eg www.yoursite.com
• Hosting: a host is a computer that stores the files that make up your website or web application. This computer is running all the time so it can be accessed by other people. Every website needs to be hosted somewhere.
• PHP, Java, Ruby, .NET, .ASP: These are common progamming languages. There are differences between each language. Good web application developers won't trouble you too much with the details unless you ask them.

What do I look for in a web developer?

Firstly, check out their portfolio. This should give you a good idea about what types of web application development they are capabale of, and whether they can build what you need. Web developers are very technical people. Good web developers realise that most people don't have an in-depth understanding of the subject, so will explain things in layman's terms. If a web developer uses too much jargon during the quoting process, then they will probably frustrate you during the project. It's probably best to choose someone who knows the tech stuff, but who can pitch at your level. It probably doesn't really matter whether they are a PHP developer, a Java developer or which language they are skilled in, if they have built something similar to what you need before, you should feel confident that they will do the right job for you.
