How Much You’ll Pay for an Aussie Tradie

(January 23, 2017) The cost of renovating in Australia continues to soar with the average hourly rate to hire a tradie up 6.7 per cent year on year. In the last quarter alone, prices have risen by 4.9 per cent, reflecting the intense growth of Australia’s renovation sector.

Jobs website’s quarterly Tradie Price Index released today recorded higher earnings across all major trade industries, except for carpentry.

Carpenters charged 7.8 per cent less over the past year, while tilers (10.9%), plumbers (5.9%) and painters (4.9%) all increased their rates over the same time period.

Western Australia recorded the greatest growth with a 12.5 per cent hike in overall renovation costs, confirming its title as the most expensive state to renovate in Australia. Weighted average hourly rate is $73.08.

Queensland remains the second most expensive state to renovate with the average tradie costing $69.93 per hour, a 12.1 per cent increase on last year.

New South Wales also experienced a surge (2.4%) in tradie prices in the last year, particularly in the last quarter where prices rose 9 per cent, putting the average hourly rate at $64.46.

Meanwhile, Victoria was the only state to record negative growth in the renovation sector, with tradie prices down 1.4 percent year on year.

Hourly rates are “gross” rates and aside from including the cost of labour, also cover the cost of running the business including insurance, tools, work vehicles, insurance and superannuation
