As we look around our sunburnt country… we notice solar panels going up everywhere. It makes so much sense to harness the sun’s power, and at the same time, it would make even more sense to reflect the sun’s heat to keep our homes cool throughout the hot weather. Just think: Cool house, lower power bills, and your solar panel are making you money.

So how does it work? At Shades & Tones, we use Dulux Acra-tex infra cool roof technology, which lowers the surface temperature of your roof. A black roof for example, on a Summer’s day, can reach up to 90 degrees surface temperature, but an infra cool roof black system can lower the roof temperature by 20 degrees, lowering the inside temperature of your home from 35 degrees to 25 degrees. This wonderful product will block out visible and invisible light, lower temperatures, protect the life of your roof tile, and act as a roof membrane.

Shades & Tones has had great feedback from customers on the look of the roof and the cooling of their homes. So just how can we apply this product? You will need a high-pressure water blaster, pointing tools for repairs, an airless spray gun and a good pair of shoes.

1st – Be safe – safety on the roof is number one. A roof harness and a good pair of shoes is very important.

2nd – Your roof will need high-pressure washing with a mix of chlorine and sugar soap. Like all painting – preparation is everything. Your roof tiles will wash up beautifully and clean.

3rd – On most homes, a little bit of pointing may have washed away – so re-pointing may be required where needed.

4th – Because most of the roof tiles will be washed back to bare concrete, you should spray on a coat of clear concrete sealer. The sealer sucks into the surface area, making for a stronger final coat. Next two coats of Dulux Acratex infra cool roof system are sprayed on with an airless spray gun. The paint comes out of the gun like butter – thick and creamy and fills minor imperfections.

So if you’re thinking of ways to save money on your power bills, lower your carbon footprint and extend the life of your roof tiles – think Dulux Infra cool roof systems.

If you’re confident on roofs and can use a spray gun then try and give it a whirl yourself – but be extra careful. Or, why not list your painting job on Service Seeking for a professional painter and insist on Dulux cool roof systems?
