How Much Does It Cost to Build a Deck per Square Metre?

The cost of building a deck per square metre ranges from around $160 for a simple patio-deck to even $1,000+ for the installation of a premium deck, with the average price around $500/m2.

The prices of decking per square metre also greatly depend on the types of materials and finishes used. So, here’s how much you may expect to pay based on this criteria:

  • $45 to $75 per square metre for plain concrete decking
  • $55 to $90 per square metre for coloured concrete decking
  • $200 per square metre for treated pine decking

  • $350+ per square metre for composite decking
  • $800+ per square metre for decking with roofing and/or stairs
  • $1,000+ for elevated cyclone rated decking
  • $75 per square metre for a stencilled finish
  • $65 per square metre for a stale impression

For instance, if you want a merbau deck, the average price for it is between $280 and $320 per square metre. If the deck is elevated, you’ll need a balustrade in addition, which costs $320 per metre if it’s made of glass, and $180 per metre if it’s made of timber and wire.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Wooden Deck?

Depending on the materials and finishes used, a mid-sized 15-square-metre wooden deck costs between $3,000 and $5,000.

The average cost of a timber deck calculated per square metre ranges between $170 and $250 while the typical hourly rate Australian experts charge for decking services is $50/hr.

The type of timber has the greatest influence on the cost of a wooden deck. So, you may expect to pay $200/m2 for treated pine decking and more than $320/m2 for hardwood timber decking.

A pine deck is a cheaper option and its average price is from $3,600 to $5,200, as is the average cost of a merbau deck, while a cedar deck costs from 3,800 to 5,400 on average.

What Is the Best Wood for Decking in Australia?

The best wood materials are also most commonly used for decking projects. Several most common timber types Australians use for decking are the following:

  1. Treated pine – a softwood, the least expensive option, but may require extra maintenance (make sure you choose the one which is suitable for outdoor use).
  2. Merbau – a popular, durable and affordable hardwood, which is resistant to insects and rot.
  3. Ironbark – extremely durable heavy hardwood timber perfect for decking.
  4. Blackbutt – a fire-resistant and termite-resistant Australian native species.
  5. Jarrah – a durable, fire-resistant, expensive timber popular for decking.
  6. Spotted Gum – a durable and dense timber, perfect for decking in bushfire-prone zones.
  7. Stringybark – yellow variation is durable enough for outdoor use and decking, while the white is not such a good choice.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Composite Deck?

The average cost to install a composite deck starts at $100 per square metre and goes up to $350/m2 or more, depending on the brand and many other factors mentioned when talking about the cost of the other decking options.

The most popular brands are Trex, ModWood and FutureWood.

Composite decks are made from a combination of timber fibres and plastic, which may recycled. This material is durable, waterproof and requires low maintenance, which makes it a perfect choice for decking.

How Much Does a Ground Level Deck Cost?

The price for building a 6x4m ground-level deck from standard affordable decking materials ranges from $5,000 to $10,000.

A more specific cost estimate is $8,000 for a medium (20m2) ground deck without a roof built on a flat and stable terrain, which is not in a bushfire-prone area according to strict Australian standards, and which doesn’t require a balustrade for safety reasons. The price for a smaller ground deck (12m2) built under the same conditions is $4,800, whereas a larger one (30m2) costs $12,000.

If the ground is slightly sloping for instance, the price increases for about $600 to $1,500 depending on the size of the deck.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Raised Deck?

A 6x4m raised deck with the necessary balustrade and stairs, when made from standard cost-effective decking materials, costs between $15,000 and $20,000. If you want to add a roof to it, the price increases to $20,000 to $30,000.

Building an elevated deck is a more complex project so the prices are higher too.

For instance, the approximate cost for a 20-square-metre raised deck is

  • $10,000 if the deck:
  • is with no roof,
  • is 60-90cm off the ground,
  • the ground is flat and stable,
  • is not in a bushfire-prone area, and
  • has a 12-metre-long timber or wire balustrade.

The price for a similar smaller raised deck (12m2) which is 60-90cm off the ground would be $7,800 and a larger one (30m2) would cost $16,800.

However, if the medium-sized deck is 90-160cm off the ground, or if the site is steep, the cost rises up to $13,800. Similarly, if it’s 1.6-4m off the ground, the price increases to $15,800 for a flat site and even up to $17,800 when built on the steep site.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Deck with a Roof on It?

The price of $200 per square metre is an average cost estimate for roofs made of timber and Colorbond or polycarbonate.

For instance, 30m2 of roof decking costs $1,000 to 3,900 to install, depending on the material you choose.

The average price to build a deck with a roof will vary based on a number of factors including the roof type and size.

Do you want a permanent roof or the one you can take on and off? Based on this decision, you may choose a traditional roof to protect you from harsh weather or a more cost-effective option such as a pergola or an awning perhaps.

For example, a simple little 2.5 x 2.5m cubed pergola can cost around $1700, while a beautiful high-end pergola you can cost around $2,700 per square metre depending on the materials and the site.

A traditional roof is more expensive. If you choose an awning for example, the total cost depends on the type and quality of its material, too.

What Affects the Cost of Deck Construction?

Aside from size, several other factors are considered in determining the cost of a decking job. Some of these are the following.

This constitutes a big chunk of a deck construction’s overall cost. There are different decking materials to choose from including:

  • timber,
  • composite,
  • synthetic,
  • treated pine.

They vary in prices with composite being the most expensive. They also differ in other aspects including maintenance requirements, lifespan, and aesthetic quality.

Specifics of the Deck

How your deck is designed and how wide is a decking board are the factors that play a huge role in the price too. Expect to pay more if the deck you want:

  • is of a nonstandard shape (i.e. shapes other than a typical quadrilateral),
  • includes levels and stairs,
  • has balustrades, benches, and/or roofing,
  • has lighting,
  • is elevated,
  • contains accessories such as e.g. timber for bearers and joists, nuts, bolts, posts,
  • includes other extras to enhance its functionality.

Site Condition

You also need to take into consideration how easy it will be for builders to complete the job. It will take them a long time if there are tanks, gas lines, and trees that they need to avoid.

Do they need to use a scaffolding or a ladder? Does your backyard have difficult access?

Waterproofing and sealing are necessary if you want to lengthen the lifespan of your deck. However, they also mean additional costs.

Do I Need a Permit to Build a Deck?

The only 100% certain way to find out the right answer to this question is to contact your local council and check it with them because not all states and areas have the same criteria.

For instance, if you want to install a solid roof with tiles, it is very likely that the permit will be necessary.

Whether you need a council approval to build a deck or not primarily depends on the Australian state in which you live.

The next factor is the deck size. In some areas you aren’t allowed to build a deck larger than 10m2 without a council approval, whereas in other areas you may build a deck of 25m2 without the approval.

The deck height also plays a key role in this matter because raised decks are potentially dangerous. So, in some states you can build a deck of up to 60cm high with no approval while in others you don’t need a permit even for decks which are up to 1m high.

Also, there are two types of permits that may be required: a planning and a building permit. The planning permit has to do with boundary regulations and aesthetics, whereas the building one deals with construction and safety regulations.

If you decide to build a deck without a permit even though one is required, bear in mind that this bad decision can haunt you once you decide to sell your house. What’s more, it’s not only a matter of paying fines but your family safety.
