(January 23, 2017) The cost of renovating in Sydney is 9.8 per cent more expensive today than it was last quarter, according to new data released by jobs website ServiceSeeking.com.au.
The quarterly Tradie Price Index recorded higher earnings across all trades except carpentry, indicating increased activity in Sydney’s home renovations market. The average hourly cost of a tradie sits at $64.97, over $5.00 more per hour than October 2016.
“Sydney’s the most expensive city in Australia to buy a house right now, so it makes sense that people are renovating rather than buying to upsize”, says ServiceSeeking.com.au CEO Jeremy Levitt.
“Even though tradie prices are up, the cost of renovating in Sydney actually sits 1.8 per cent below the national average. If you were in Western Australia you’d be paying around $8.00 more per hour.”
So if you’re thinking of renovating this year, how much can you expect to pay for a tradie in Sydney?
Plumbers remain the most expensive tradie to hire, up 5.9 percent since last quarter to bring their average hourly rate to $79.70.
Second in line are Sydney’s electricians at $75.68, after recording a 3.9 per cent increase in average hourly rate over the last quarter.
In terms of quarterly growth, landscapers and painters came out on top, after a huge 18.4 percent and 13.4 percent revenue hike at the end of 2016.
The prices were derived by comparing a sample of 52,000 quotes submitted during the FY17 Q2 through ServiceSeeking.com.au, the website for getting any job done from tradies to professional services.
Hourly rates are gross and aside from cost of labour, cover the cost of running a business (insurance, tools, transport, superannuation etc.).
