WA Tradies the Best Paid in Australia

(January 23, 2017) As house prices are expected to continue falling in Western Australia, a shortage of skilled tradespeople in the state has led to a 12.5 percent increase in the cost of renovating.

The quarterly Tradie Price Index released today by jobs website reveals that WA is by far the most expensive state to hire a tradie, with the average hourly rate sitting 10.4 per cent above the national average.

“We have thousands of jobs and quotes being posted on our site every week, and from that data we can see a relative undersupply of tradespeople to current levels of demand in WA”, says CEO Jeremy Levitt.

“People in WA are trying to sell now to make the most of their investment before property prices hit rock bottom. The problem is, there’s not enough tradies to match that demand”.

In such a tight market, how much can Western Australian’s expect to pay for a tradie in 2017?

Plumbers remain the most expensive tradie to hire, up 1.6 per cent on last quarter, charging an average hourly price of $94.44.

Electricians ($92.24) aren’t far behind, with an increase of 4.2 per cent in average hourly price since last quarter.

The real trade to look out for is landscaping, which recorded a 32.2 per cent increase year on year and 25.4 per cent hike in the last quarter alone. Weighted average hourly rate currently sits at $76.45.

Hourly rates are “gross” rates and aside from including the cost of labour, also cover the cost of running the business including insurance, tools, work vehicles, insurance and superannuation.

The prices were derived by comparing a sample of 52,000 quotes submitted during the FY17 Q2 through, the website for getting any job done from tradies to professional services.
