For any renovator, winning the job is only the beginning. The difficult part is actually ensuring that your client is happy with your work and that they leave positive feedback on your profile and recommend you to their friends and family.

Here are a couple of basic tips on how to keep your clients satisfied – and possibly coming back for more.

1. Set a schedule – and stick to it

Schedules are very important in all renovation projects. Clients already expect that renovations will disrupt their daily lives, but they would definitely appreciate it if the reno is as unobtrusive as possible. Work out a schedule with your client during a pre-construction meeting – what time they should expect you to arrive and leave the site, the start and completion dates, etc. This will allow your client to adjust their schedule to accommodate you. Make sure that you won’t be faulted for any delays in construction as well. Order all the necessary materials ahead of time and ensure that all your equipment is in good working condition. Keeping an organised schedule won’t just make your clients grateful; it’ll save you precious time as well.

2. Communicate openly

Keep communication lines open between you and your client throughout the renovation process. Schedule regular meetings to update them on the progress of your work, to iron out any construction issues, or to warn them of necessary changes in the plan or schedule. It’s better to advise them early about problems that crop up than leave them frustrated over expectations that you weren’t able to meet.

3. Prioritise their interests

As the expert, you should be able to spot any building or design flaws that have escaped your client’s notice. Several years in the business would also have exposed you to the most efficient methods and the best suppliers. Suggesting improvements in their plans, places to get cheap but high-quality materials, and ways to make the reno process more efficient can definitely up your rep as an excellent renovator.

4. Keep things clean

One of the first things that a client notices and possibly one of the top things that they judge you on is your cleanliness. Keeping an orderly renovation site won’t just impress your clients; it might get attention from their neighbours – or your potential clients – too! It’s pretty impossible to keep your work area spotless at all times, but make sure that you keep the clutter to a bare minimum when you leave your client’s home every day. A staging area also works well when it comes to organising the materials and equipment and setting up a temporary place for the debris. If you want to use a particular location for the staging area, like the garage or a spot in their backyard, be sure to talk it out with your client before the renovation starts.
