A Quick Response Made Simon’s Smoke Alarm Upgrade Easy

Simon needed to get two hardwired smoke alarms replaced at his property in Morningside. In Queensland, keeping up with fire safety regulations is just one of those necessary household admin tasks, so he posted the job online to find a licensed sparky to swap out the old units for a pair of interconnected Zen GT alarms.

He decided to post the specifications on ServiceSeeking.com.au, mostly looking to get the ball rolling without the usual run-around of chasing quotes. The turnaround was quicker than he anticipated.

"I described the job and when I wanted it done by and got a response within half an hour from a capable electrician," Simon says.

That response came from Mohssen, a licensed contractor running SMS Electrical and Data. Instead of rocking up with unanswered questions, Mohssen used the platform's chat to sort out the finer details days before the actual tool belts were put on. They talked through the layout, swapped a few photos of the existing setup, and cleared up exactly what was required.

By the time Mohssen arrived on-site—right on schedule—the plan was set. Aside from completing the physical installation, Mohssen walked Simon through the current compliance laws, explaining why the alarms needed to be installed in specific locations to meet state regulations.

Simon found the interaction straightforward and stress-free, describing Mohssen as "a very friendly and competent guy that I will recommend to others."

For Simon, the real relief came with the paperwork. He was "happy to know that the job was done well, I received a certificate of completion, and that I wouldn't need to worry about it again."

But the experience also got Simon thinking about the platforms homeowners use to find trades. Having looked at options in the past, he found the contrast in how these platforms operate to be a major talking point.

"I prefer your model vs AirTasker," Simon explains. "AirTasker's model is 'double dipping' as far as I'm concerned, they charge the user for using their service for each job (which is too expensive IMO), then take 20% of the job payment, which is too much and screws the provider."

Seeing how the backend fees impact the people actually doing the manual work changed his perspective on where to post future jobs.

"I will now tell everyone I know this distinction between AirTasker and ServiceSeeking.com.au; I'm sure that they will agree that your model is much fairer to everyone."

When you need an electrician, you want someone licensed who shows up on time, charges a fair rate, and leaves you compliant. Cutting out the excessive platform clips on both ends simply means the local tradie keeps what he earns, and the homeowner gets a job well done.
