About a year ago I used ServiceSeeking.com.au to get quotes for a removalist.

Within an hour or so 4 companies had quoted for my business. 3 of those quoted hourly rates just under $100 an hour, which is the going rate for a removals in metro Sydney.

But the company who ended up winning my business quoted a fixed price total of $499. In the quote they said that the $499 would cover everything. There would be ‘no surprises’ like back to base fees or if the move took longer than expected. They knew where I was moving from and to, and worked out a reasonable package for me.

The move took 2 removalists 3 hours. I wasn’t moving very far, all the stuff was already boxed up, and both houses had parking in front and ground floor access. In retrospect, I could have saved a few hundred bucks picking someone who’d quoted an hourly price, but I was still delighted with the deal because I knew that $499 was the MOST I was going to pay, which was still well under my budget.
