Almost all building projects, whether residential or commercial, need a design plan. Many people know that draftsmen and architects are the people to call when it comes to building plans, but who exactly do you need? Here is some basic info to help you know the difference between architects and draftsmen.

Draftsmen

An architectural draftsman, draughtsman, or drafter is someone who translates an architect’s plans into a scale drawing. Today’s draftsmen are experts in computer-aided design (CAD) software and are quite familiar with the design requirements needed to meet council approval. Draftsmen can work for private clients (usually for residential projects) and architectural firms where they are in charge of creating the finalised drawing based on the architects’ designs.

Some draftsmen are registered as building designers, which means that they can also help you create a design plan for your home. Although they are not required to pass the same tests or undergo the same education as architects, building designers are still required to be licensed by a building state board before they can practise their craft.

Architects

While architects can also draw plans for your building project, their work is much more involved than that. An architect is only allowed to label him or herself as such after completing a university degree in architecture, at least two years of practical experience, and passing all the requirements of the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia. This entitles them to carry out residential and commercial building designs plus in-depth project management. Professional architects not only produce amazing designs, they also have sufficient knowledge to ensure that these designs will yield buildings that are structurally safe and sound.

Who do you need?

For commercial projects, it is pretty obvious that the skills of a licensed architect are required. However, for some residential projects, it’s probably more practical to hire a draftsman instead. Before making a decision, evaluate your needs first. If you need someone who can see your building project from the design through to completion, hiring an architect is your best bet. An architect is also the go-to person for complex house designs, new home building, or major renovations.

On the other hand, if you have a limited budget and you already know the design you want, hire a draftsman. Many experienced draftsmen have enough knowledge to help you out with minor building issues, so get a draftsman if you’re just after someone who can draw you a plan that will meet council requirements. If you’re still unsure about the design that you want but don’t have enough budget for professional architectural services, consider hiring a licensed building designer instead.

Whether you hire a draftsman or an architect, the most important thing to remember is to get someone who has tons of positive feedback from their previous clients and sufficient experience with building projects that are similar to yours. Compare quotes from architects and draftsmen now!
