Graphic designer Melissa Toms reveals the five essential steps to achieving the logo design of your dreams.

So you want a new logo design for your business? Do you want it to sum up your business in one glance and grab the attention (and business) of everyone who sees it? You really just want it to be PERFECT!

But how can you trust someone who doesn’t know your business like you do to understand the ideas you have in your head and deliver the perfect logo design?

Here’s how:

Step 1: Information
Firstly, gather some basic business info. This includes company name, word(s), letter(s), icon(s) or anything else you’d like included in the logo design. Think about what your business offers and its core values and/or mission and if you’d like this reflected in the logo design.

Step 2: Style
Next on your logo to-do list is to think about how your business is branded or how you’d like it branded. Consider the style, e.g. modern, funky, rock ’n’ roll, girly…. the list goes on. Pick a style that suits your business and the product or service you offer. If you know your target market, it will be easier to find your style. There are so many questions to mull over. Do you want a tagline included, or do you just want to include an image, icon or simply text? Colours are also an important consideration, so make sure you put some time aside to think about the perfect palette.

Step 3: Research
Do some research and find out who your competitors are. Think about what you like about their logos and work out how you can use their ideas to make your perfect logo design.

Step 4: Communication
When you post your job on ServiceSeeking.com.au, make sure you give an indication of the style you want and how you will be using your logo. It will ensure you get the right people quoting on your job, and they will be able to give you a more accurate price.

Step 5: Selection
Quotes will range from as little as $70-$80 up to $200 or sometimes even more. Considering your logo design is the face of your business, you need to weigh up cost to quality. Consider the designer’s portfolio, package and service. Will they personally be handling your job? Are they available when you need them? Can you make changes? What files will you get with the final design?

A logo design is often the first impression of a business, so make sure you find someone who cares about creating the perfect logo as much as you do!

Good luck!
