Garden tasks in early spring

  • Clear your drainage. Most likely, your drainage has been filled with dried leaves, small branches, and other debris over the winter, so you need to get rid of these things first. Seedlings thrive best in soil that drains properly.
  • Fix your garden beds, trellises, and fencing. Winter soil can put a lot of strain, especially on raised beds. Check the sides of the beds or the stake and find out if they’re starting to lean awkwardly or give way.
  • Start weeding and mulch bare spots. Weeds in early spring are young, and they still have shallow roots, which makes them easier to pull. Taking them out early can help minimise weed damage. Additionally, you may notice bare spots in your garden beds; you can cover them up with mulch to prevent new weeds from sprouting in those areas.
  • ‘Top dress’ your garden beds if it’s dry enough. Use compost or well-seasoned manure to prepare the beds for planting. You don’t need to dig the beds since established beds already have a soil ecosystem that’s best left untouched. Also, newly added nutrients will eventually work their way down into the soil.
