No matter how pretty your house is, it can look shabby and unkempt if you have old, rusty gutters. Gutters are actually easy to update. All you need is a coat of paint. So, how will you know which paint to use for your gutter type?

New gutters

Painted steel gutters can last for a very long time. Before painting your new gutters, make sure to wash them first with water and some mild detergent. Lightly scrub the surface to remove the surface treatment, then rinse. Once it’s completely dry, you can start painting. Alternatively, you can just wipe the surface with white vinegar. It’s a trick that some people use to make the paint adhere to the metal. Since your gutter is steel, make sure to use a rust-preventive primer before you paint a top coat. Two coats of paint should be enough.

Vinyl gutters

Over time, vinyl gutters can get very dirty and lose their vivid colour. Instead of buying a replacement, painting your gutters is a more low-cost alternative. First, make sure to get rid of all the grime and dirt. Once the gutters are completely dry, paint them with weather-resistant exterior latex paint.

Aluminium gutters

Aluminium is paint-friendly. Just make sure to clean and dry your gutters thoroughly before you start painting. For maximum paint absorption, use a clear acrylic bonding primer. If not, regular oil-based metal primer is your second-best option. Apply the second coat after 48 hours of applying the primer. This ensures a well-bonded top coat.

By carefully preparing the gutter surface and applying the appropriate paint, you can get the best results. Your old gutters will look like new ones for years to come. For holes and dents, we suggest that you get a roofing expert to make the necessary repairs. If you’re not keen on painting the gutters by yourself, hire a painting expert. All you need to do is post your job to get their free quotes.
