A leaking roof is a common problem that a lot of homeowners are familiar with. It’s a dilemma that’s not often seen unless it rains, and by then, it’s too late.

Aside from the ugly water stains on your ceiling, roof leaks are also the culprit for mouldy and damaged insulation. But how do you check for leaks in your roof? Here are some tips that might help.

Find the problem before it finds you

When it comes to leaking roofs, finding the source of the leak may be the hardest part. One way to spot the leak is when it’s raining; only then can you check where the water is coursing from. Leaks are usually caused by roof penetration. Check near areas of plumbing and roof vents, chimneys, dormers or any other area that projects through the roof. When checking in dry weather, look for some telltale signs of moisture or rot. If you have an attic, just look for water stains or black marks.

When you have the time, you might also want to check the surface of your roof. Look out for missing shingles, damaged flashings and/or rotting gutters. Once you’ve seen the extent of the damage, you can then decide if what you need is a roof replacement or a roof repair.

Repair or replace

Once you’ve seen the extent of the damage, you can then decide if what you need is a roof replacement or a roof repair. If you find it difficult to assess your roof or if the damage is quite extensive, we suggest that you hire a roofing expert. They should be able to give you an accurate assessment of the repair and the cost that it would incur.
