Top tips for deck care and maintenance

Spring is almost here! For some, it’s the ideal time for deck care and maintenance. By maintaining your deck, you can reduce the need for repairs, get the most out of your outdoor space, and protect your investment. Here are our tips on how to keep your deck in tip-top shape.

Tip 1: Check for any damaged boards

Deck boards are subject to daily wear and tear. If not properly cared for, they can easily be worn out. Any cracks, splinters and loose boards should be taken care of at once. Otherwise, you’re setting yourself and your family up for injury. If the problem is severe, it’s time to have those boards replaced.

Tip 2: Inspect the support beams

The structural support of your deck is vulnerable to animals and insects. Regularly inspect the beams for animal scratches and insect damage. Termite control is important if your deck is largely made out of wood. Contact pest control if you find any signs of these insects. If animals are the problem, consider putting a lattice underneath your deck to keep the critters out.

Tip 3: Check for loose nails, screws and bolts

Nails, screws, and bolts hold your deck in place and keep it from tumbling down. Loose nails should be hammered back while loose screws and bolts should be twisted and wrenched into place. If these are rusty, have them replaced with stainless steel ones that are available at any hardware store.

Tip 4: Clean your deck

Aside from dirt, mould and mildew are the most common problems of decking. Carefully scrub your deck with mild soap and water to get rid of these. Just don’t forget to rinse to remove any remaining soap and loosened dirt.

Tip 5: Reseal your deck

Resealing your deck is very important. By preventing moisture, your deck will remain in good shape for many years to come. First, lightly sand the deck. If you have sealed it previously, just purchase a remover/stripper from your local hardware store and follow the instructions for removal. Depending on your preference, you can use stains, oils and even paint to coat your deck. After applying the sealant, let it dry completely, then add another coat or two.
