Home Insulation: Hidden Places Cold Air Gets In

If your home never seems to stay warm during winter, your heater may not be the problem. In many homes, warm air escapes through small gaps around the building, while cold air finds its way inside through the same openings. Even a well-heated house can feel chilly if it's constantly losing heat.

Good home insulation certainly helps, but insulation works best when combined with proper air sealing. Hidden draughts can reduce your home's energy efficiency, make rooms feel uncomfortable and increase heating costs over time.

The challenge is that many of these leaks aren't obvious. While most people notice a draught around a front door or window, many of the biggest sources of heat loss are tucked away in areas you rarely see.

Here are some of the most common places where cold air gets into Australian homes.

Ceiling and roof space

Because warm air naturally rises, the ceiling is one of the biggest areas for heat loss. If your roof space isn't properly insulated or contains gaps around ceiling access hatches, recessed lighting or service penetrations, heated air can escape into the roof cavity before leaving the home altogether.

Many older Australian homes have insulation that no longer performs as well as it once did, while some newer homes may have insulation that doesn't fully cover every section of the ceiling. If some rooms feel colder than others despite using the heater, the roof space could be contributing to the problem.

Around doors and windows

Doors and windows are among the most noticeable sources of draughts, especially during windy weather. Over time, weather seals can wear out, timber frames may shift slightly, and tiny gaps develop around the edges.

Sliding doors are another common weak point because they rely on moving tracks rather than fixed seals.

These gaps might appear insignificant, but together they can allow a steady flow of cold outside air into your home while letting heated air escape.

Older homes are particularly prone to this issue, although even relatively new homes can develop gaps as building materials naturally expand and contract over the seasons.

Exhaust fans and vents

Your bathroom exhaust fan, laundry vent and rangehood all provide necessary ventilation. However, when they're not operating, they can also become pathways for unwanted air movement if they don't have effective dampers. Bathroom exhaust fans are one of the most common sources of air leakage.

The same applies to dryer vents and rangehood ducting, particularly where they connect to external walls or the roof. If these openings aren't properly sealed, cold outdoor air can travel back into the home.

Gaps around plumbing and electrical services

Every home contains openings where plumbing pipes, electrical wiring, gas lines and internet cables pass through walls, ceilings and floors.

These service penetrations are often hidden behind cupboards, inside roof spaces or beneath the house, making them easy to overlook.

Even relatively small gaps can allow air to move between the inside and outside of your home. Individually they may not seem significant, but when combined throughout the house they can contribute to noticeable heat loss.

Professional insulation installers and energy assessors know where these hidden gaps are commonly found and can identify areas that aren't immediately visible.

Under the floor

Homes built on stumps or raised foundations are especially vulnerable to cold air entering from underneath.

Without effective underfloor insulation, cold air circulating beneath the home can cool the floor above, making rooms feel uncomfortable even when the heating is on.

You may notice this most during winter mornings when tiled, timber or laminate flooring feels particularly cold underfoot.

Poorly sealed subfloors can also allow draughts to move up through gaps around floorboards, skirting boards and service penetrations.

Fireplaces and chimneys

A fireplace creates a cosy atmosphere during winter, but when it's not being used, the chimney can become a direct escape route for warm indoor air.

If the chimney damper doesn't close tightly, heated air can continue rising up the flue while cold outside air moves back into the room.

Even decorative fireplaces that are rarely used may still contribute to heat loss if they haven't been properly sealed.

Ceiling hatches and attic access

Ceiling access panels are often forgotten when discussing insulation, yet they can be a surprisingly common source of draughts.

Unlike the rest of the ceiling, these removable panels don't always sit tightly within their frames. Warm air escaping through these openings reduces the effectiveness of nearby insulation and can make heating systems work harder than necessary.

This is especially noticeable in homes where the manhole is located in a central hallway, as warm air naturally rises toward that point.

Wall cavities

External walls help separate your home's indoor temperature from the weather outside. If wall insulation is missing, damaged or poorly installed, those walls can become significant pathways for heat transfer.

While you can't see inside the walls, you'll often notice the symptoms. Certain rooms may always feel colder, or exterior walls may feel noticeably cool to the touch during winter.

Unlike visible draughts, this type of heat loss usually requires professional assessment to identify accurately.

Small air leaks can add up to a home that's harder to heat and more expensive to keep comfortable during winter. While some draughts are easy to notice, many of the biggest sources of heat loss are hidden behind walls, above ceilings or beneath the floor.
