(October 26, 2016) Growth in the renovation sector is just above CPI gain again, which is a boost for the trade services economy.

The average cost to hire a tradie across Australia is $59.56 per hour, up 1.6 per cent year-on-year and 0.7 per cent in the last quarter. The Consumer Price Index released today shows an increase of 1.3 per cent yearly in the cost of living and 0.7 per cent quarterly.

All industries, except for landscaping, recorded higher earnings according to the latest statistics released by jobs website ServiceSeeking.com.au’s quarterly Tradie Price Index.

Landscapers charged 8.5 per cent less over the past year, but tilers (4.4 per cent), electricians (4.8 per cent) and carpenters (4.3 per cent) all increased their rates over the same time period.

Queensland yielded the greatest growth with a 7.5 per cent spike in tradie prices to remain the most expensive state to renovate. The average hourly rate is $62.14.

WA is still the second most expensive state to renovate, with the average tradie costing $61.61 an hour to hire, down 2.1 per cent.

The Victorian market started the new financial year strongly with a 2.4 per cent increase year-on-year with an average price of $56.38.

Meanwhile, NSW saw a 2.1 per cent decrease in costs across the eight renovation categories to $59.28.
