Imagine your food, dishes, and linens stacked up neatly on your shelves, each food item labelled and categorised–a clutter-free kitchen you never thought could exist. These are the perks of a walk-in pantry.

A walk-in pantry is the quintessential “a place for everything and everything in its place” space. It’s also one of the most requested features in kitchen renovations.

So, what makes the walk-in pantry so great? Aside from extra storage, food stored in a walk-in pantry also stays fresh for longer since it’s kept away from direct sunlight. With everything in its proper place, you will spend less time trying to find a misplaced spice or two. You can also easily place day-to-day items within reach.

Here are six simple ways to keep your walk-in pantry organised:

1.  For items like pasta, grains, beans, etc., use glass jars or see-through containers so you can identify the contents at a glance. For fruits, vegetables and other perishables that can’t be stacked, baskets and bins will do the trick. Aside from looking neat, baskets also make your walk-in pantry look nice and homey.

2.  If you want to brighten up your walk-in closet, paint the walls white or any bright colour. White is a good background as it opens up the space. It will also make it easier for you to see everything that’s stored in your walk-in pantry.

3.  Create zones and group food items by type: canned goods, sodas, soups, pet food, and so on. Label each food type accordingly. You can use shelf dividers if you like. The goal here is to be able to see everything in an instant so you can quickly grab whatever you need.

4.  Shallow shelves are more practical for food storage than deep ones. It’s best to keep food stacked only one or two items deep since food that’s difficult to reach or see tends to be forgotten. Set up a pantry containing easy-to-see food items in rotation.

5.  Use deep shelves for storing your bulky kitchen appliances. For added convenience, consider using a turntable, baskets, and some bins.

6.  Allow ample room for posting a calendar, cork board, or reminder board where you can tack a shopping list. Add wall hooks to hang your aprons, dish towels, and fruit baskets. Allow plenty of floor area so that you can move easily inside your pantry.
