Now let’s dive a bit deeper into the costs of particular types of fences many people are interested in.

How Much Is Colorbond Fencing?

The average cost of Colorbond fencing installation is $75 per metre, but it may range from $65 to $100 per metre depending on your place of living.

In fact, the price per standard panel is between $66 and $87, whereas typical installation costs vary between $68 and $78.

Colorbond fence installers usually charge less per metre if the fence is longer and larger.

For instance, for a 1.8m high fence installation that is less than 10m long you may expect to pay e.g. $100/m, whereas the fence of the same height but longer, e.g. 50m would perhaps cost around $80/m.

The total price of a Colorbond fence also depends on:

  • the style and size of the panels,
  • the height of the fence,
  • fixings,
  • post caps,
  • how many gates you need,
  • whether the gates you want are single or double,
  • whether you need to remove the old fence,
  • how complex the installation is and
  • other typical factors.

How Much Is A Timber Fence per Metre?

A rough cost estimate for installing a timber fence of standard 1.8m height starts from $75 per metre. The average costs for some common types of timber fences are:

  • $75 – $120 per metre for a treated pine paling fence
  • $80 – $125 per metre for a hardwood paling fence
  • $280 – $350 per metre for treated pine timber slat fence
  • $320 for a pre-primed treated pine fence (92mm x 18mm)
  • $330 per metre for a 1.5m hardwood Merbau fence (42mm x 18mm)

These prices typically include labour and installation costs as well.

Besides the fence size and the other already mentioned factors that affect the total cost of fencing, you also need to take into consideration whether painting or staining your timber fence is necessary.

Similarly, the sort of timber you choose will make a big impact on the price. Treated pine timber is the least expensive, while imported types of timber are usually more pricey.

For example, for timber fences that are 10m long and 1.95m high, you’ll pay $750 if it’s a cypress fence with exposed posts and capping, $1850 for a Merbau fence of this kind, and $2050 for the same brush panel fence including installation.

Generally, timber is among the most affordable fencing materials. Still, while cheaper upfront, when compared to other fence types that are easy to maintain such as vinyl, wood requires more regular treatments to last longer.

That’s why it costs more in the long run.

Different types and species of wood are used for fencing, but the most common ones are cedar, spruce, and pine. Depending on the species, they may last for about 4 to 30 years.

How Much Does Wrought Iron Fencing Cost?

The cost to install a wrought iron fence is as low as $115 to $140 per metre for plain black iron, whereas a supreme quality of the same fence material type may reach and exceed the price of $450 to $600 per metre.

Wrought iron fence prices per panel vary between $135 and $2,500 depending on the dimensions, material features and quality. For example, a 1.2 x 2m wrought iron panel is around $168.

As with the other fencing types, the total cost depends on the dimensions, your local rates, the complexity of installation and the other previously mentioned factors.

For example, the price for a fence that is 40 – 60 metres long is between $3,700 and $7,300. This price includes the cost of materials, $115 – $140 per metre, and an additional $850 to $1,800 for installation.

What Is The Cost to Install PVC Fencing?

The price for installing a standard PVC fence ranges from $25 to $180 per metre primarily depending on the size and type or style of the PVC fence you want and labour costs.

Here are the average prices for some typical PVC fencing.

What is the cost of PVC fencing?

PVC fence types

Average fence price

Average installation cost

Picket fences

$50 – $90 per metre

$55/m – $145/m

Semi-private fences

$80 – $100 per metre

$70/m – $150/m

Privacy fences

$80 – $110 per metre

$70/m – $180/m

Rural fences

$40 – $110+ per metre

$25/m – $70/m for a two-rail rural fence (three and four-rail fences are more expensive)

The final factor in determining the additional cost for PVC fencing is the colour and texture you choose. It’s possible to make a vinyl fence that looks like it is made from another material entirely such as wood or stone, which also affects the total cost.

The same goes for the thickness and the quality of the material, as well as decorative elements.

How Much Does It Cost to Put Up A Brick Fence?

A standard simple brick fence costs between $2,000 and $3,500 for a fence that is around 20m long, while a typical rate for a brick fence installation is $50 to $60 per hour.

Image source Kontis Fencing & Automatic Gates

The cost of brick fencing varies greatly because these are usually combined with other types of fencing such as timber picket fencing or wrought iron for instance.

It means that you may need to hire a bricklayer in addition to a fencer if there’s no brick fencing specialist where you live. Bricklayers often charge $1.50 to $1.90 per brick or from $20 to $40 per hour. Also, rendered bricks are more expensive than plain bricks.

Before installing a brick fence, you’ll probably need council approval because most brick fences cannot be more than 1.5 to 2 metres high in Australia.

How Much Does Aluminium Fencing Cost?

An aluminium fence installation costs between $75 and $85 per metre.

Expect to pay between $750 and $1200 per metre for a rendered brick and aluminium fence, whereas sandstone and aluminium fences cost from $850 to $1,000 per metre. The price range for powder-coated aluminium slat fence screens is $95 – $155 per square metre.

As far as the components for an aluminium fence are concerned, expect to pay around $18 per 1.8-metre panel, $13 per post, $11 – $17per 2.35 metre-long fencing rail, and approximately $40 per 2.35 metre-long lattice.

If you need a gate, the price is around $500 for a pedestrian one, while the price for a double drive gate is around $1,300 including gate installation costs.

As you already know, the total cost depends on various factors such as the height and style of the fence.

It also depends on whether the fence needs to be installed on a flat or sloping surface because sloping surfaces require more labour, so the price is higher.

What Factors Determine The Cost of Fencing?

Always keep in mind that fencing specialists look at numerous factors when they give a quote. These things will determine the amount of work to be done, thus affecting the overall cost of the job.

  • Material used – Brick is the most affordable option and is perfect if you’re on a budget. Colorbond, on the other hand, is a high-end material. It may be expensive, but it’s extremely durable and lasts for at least ten years.
  • Soil type – If the soil condition on your property is less than ideal, fence contractors might need to do extra work to ensure that posts are set properly.
  • Size of the job – Naturally, a bigger job is expensive as it requires more materials and labour.
  • Terrain – Do you live on a slope? If you do, expect to pay more for your job. Installing fences on flat land is more affordable.

Here are other relevant pricing factors that you should be aware of:

  • accessibility
  • necessary permits and approvals
  • fence height (standard fence heights are 0.9m, 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.1m)
  • fence decoration
  • old fence removal
  • whether you need gates
  • whether your fence needs painting or staining
  • whether you need a concrete foundation.
